As part of a 4,000-plus square-foot San Francisco penthouse, this custom concrete fireplace was conceived not just as a source of warmth, but as a commanding architectural presence within the home. Starting from an empty shell, the designer worked to create spaces that balance openness with intimacy—where each element feels intentional and scaled for comfort.
The fireplace anchors the room with quiet strength. Its clean planes and subtle surface variations bring depth and texture, while the proportions lend it a sculptural quality. By using concrete in a refined, almost understated way, the design draws the eye without overwhelming the surrounding space.
This home is rich in tactile experiences, and the fireplace is a central part of that story. Every material choice—simple on its own—was executed with a level of craft that elevates it into something memorable. In the glow of the firelight, the textures and tones shift, making the piece feel both grounded and dynamic.
More than just a functional feature, it’s a quietly commanding presence—one that defines the room without overpowering it.
