- Training Participant
Fu-Tung Cheng and his highly-trained staff will take you through a complete
five-day education on the design, craft and business of concrete countertops.
DAY 1
WELCOME! Fu-Tung will begin the Training with a discussion on evaluating a kitchen or
bathroom countertop project.
Fu-Tung will discuss his approach to the overall design of a room and how his design
decisions are reflected in the choices he makes for the countertop.
Session will include making decisions regarding shape and contour, color, edging details,
functional features, decorative inlays and other elements.
Extensive Q&A followed by demos and videos later in the day to illustrate some specific
techniques required to execute Fu-Tung's renowned countertop designs.
DAY 2
Morning Session
Demos and videos to further illustrate techniques used by the Cheng shop to execute
Fu-Tung's countertop designs.
Session followed by Q&A.
Afternoon Session
Fu-Tung will discuss the 4 countertop projects he has designed to be crafted by the
participants. Each countertop will include features and techniques discussed earlier by
Fu-Tung and shown in the demos and videos.
Participants will break into groups of three. Each group will be assigned one of the
projects. Although the groups will primarily work on their own project, they will be
encouraged to closely note how the other groups are handling the various techniques required
by their respective projects. Over the course of a few days each participant should learn
how to craft the features used in all four countertop projects.
Groups will work with rubber materials to build knock-out forms.
Late Afternoon Session
Groups will plan their "cut list." That evening, Cheng staff will cut most pieces
required for each group's molds.
DAY 3
The groups will spend much of this day carefully constructing their molds and preparing inlays
and decorative aggregates.
DAY 4
Morning Session
Groups will mix their materials and pour their countertop projects.
Two mixers will be available so the pours should be completed by late morning. Countertops
will be left to cure for 24 hours.
Group lunch offsite at a local restaurant
Afternoon Session: Building Your Countertop Business
Forum conducted by industry consultant
Topics to include: pricing concrete countertops, determining real costs and profit margins,
marketing your business, developing repeat business with design and building professionals, and
future opportunities to work on Cheng Design projects outside the Bay Area.
DAY 5
Morning Session
Groups to de-mold countertop projects. Finishing alternatives will be considered.
Fu-Tung will critique each project with respect to its technical execution. He'll
also discuss a variety of alternative design elements, features and finishes that might
have been used for the countertop projects.
Afternoon Session
Feedback Session: Candid feedback on the Training from participants including likes
and dislikes, what worked and didn't, and what participants might have wanted more of or
less. Please do not make airline reservations that depart earlier than 5 p.m. so as not
to conflict with this critical participation.
Countertop Lottery: Participants will select, by lottery if necessary, which member
of each group takes possession of their respective countertop project (subject to crating
and shipping costs).
