Round Tabletop and Base

FIVE: TABLETOP CASTING

Video Overview

See how the first casting layer is sprayed down to create the CHENG Concrete outdoor tabletop. While the casting blend is sprayed into the form, two vibrators are running to ensure that the concrete is air or bubble free. The casting blend will be followed by a 50/50 combination mix of casting and backing blend. The finished table will have a 2-inch rim all the way around, but the nominal thickness will be ¾-inch

Step 1 – Spray the Form

  • Start by spraying the outside perimeter of the base first and then work toward the center. Try to spray towards what has already been covered.
  • As you continue around the form, make sure to blow any excess sand away from the surface before spraying.
  • Spray thin coats until the material is about 1/8″ thick.
  • Spray the vertical walls of the form to finish your first spray coat.

Step 2 – Spray Another Coat

  • Spray a final coat until the entire surface is 1/8″ – 1/4″ thick.

Step 3 – Place Backing Mix on Base

  • After the entire mold face has been covered by 1/4″ of Face Mix or Casting Mix, you’re ready to place the structural backing mix.
  • A minimum of 1/2″ of structural backing will be added to bring the total thickness to 3/4″.

Step 4 – Place Backing Mix on Walls

  • Around the perimeter wall we’ll build up a 1″ thickness of backing to create a combined total thickness of 1-1/4″

Step 5 – Tabletop Demolding

  • After 24 hours of cure, it’s safe to demold the tabletop by removing the perimeter wall forms and gently flipping the entire mold base and table top over before lifting the mold base from the tabletop.
  • Do not pry against the concrete when demolding. The concrete is still curing and requires extra care to not stress it.
  • Lightly polish the surface of the table to remove any unwanted variation in color or form texture.

Finished Table

  • Once any sanding, polishing, or finishing has been completed, you can apply a concrete sealer to help protect the table from use and the elements of weather.
