Founded in 1978 by Fu-Tung Cheng, Cheng Design is a Berkeley, California company that began with residential renovations and soon built a reputation for innovative kitchen and bath design. Cheng Design has since evolved into a custom-home and commercial-product design firm.

The staff includes architects, designers, craftspeople and a fabrication crew. The firm's unique makeup and approach to the design and consultation process includes close working relationships between designers and artisans, which fosters a rare blend of creativity and craftsmanship.

Today Cheng Design is known internationally for its innovative concrete forms produced in the Berkeley workshop. The firm has reinvented the traditional kitchen and bathroom by using concrete as a sculptural element and incorporating the aesthetics of Nature. Carvings and inscriptions, inlays and artifacts, and objets trouvés are worked into colored plaster and concrete, integrating the spontaneous act of drawing with the construction of countertops and walls.

Spurred by a growing demand from both existing clients and the design community, the firm launched Cheng Design Products, Inc. in 1998 as a way to introduce the Cheng Design aesthetic to a broader market. There are two product lines: 1) kitchen hoods including eight distinct designs, and 2) Geocrete™, Cheng Design's exclusive line of modular kitchen and bathroom countertops made from a proprietary, light-weight concrete. Cheng Products are intended for the interior design community—specifically, design-specifiers and design-savvy homeowners interested in distinctive, sculptural products.
